Why a MacBook Pro ?

Yes, why a pricier Apple Macbook Pro when one can get laptops @ $500 these days? The thing is, as a computer graphics designer I require this laptop in particular to be able to work in my specialist field of special effects, video editing and interactive website design or gaming.

Mac laptops are considered elite class, fashionable and feature rich here in New Zealand. So like Apple, I decided to “think different” -of course that’d make my birthday really special.

At present I am using a Power PC G4, it allows me to do design jobs like print work and website design but not work in my field of special effects, video and interactive design.

When I purchased this computer it cost me around $700 and at the time it was considered top of the linebut doesnt have the tools installed in it like the Mac book pro for me to do what I am passionate about, the MBP costs too much for me to lay hands on right now; hence I need your contributions.

Today I have made some changes to the site:

1. Fixed the pagination system so it is not plugin dependant.
2. Removed ratings system completely
3. Put a spam check captcha in place.
4. Added some tweaks to the gamercard for better output of percentages (now I have a bar graph) and dates (parsing dates to timestamps and rendering from there instead of parsing a string and using that).

I have also decided to make a change to the blog system next time I have the chance:

1. Allow comments to be better formatted, possibly by using RTE in order to ensure ease of use.
2. Check links in comments are valid before creating the A tag. (Complete)
3. Parse all the realurl created links so that the & is replaced with “&”;
4. Create <> last buttons on the pager. (Complete)
5. Only display valid links from comments (Complete)
6. censoring of comments (Complete - though I need to learn more bad words, only censoring four so far lol).
7. 360voice Pagination update (to use blogs plugin pagination) (Complete)

Also today I have installed the alpha version of an indexed search function for the blogs. Basically it can search the blogs for a set of words (must be more than 3 letters long) and give back a list of results based on the relevance.

The search function consists of 3 TYPO3 extension plugins, one to handle the form one to handle the results and a backend module which handles the indexing of new and updated blogs.

The search relevance is yet to be based on sentences thus it works only with words currently however if I can think of a clever way to handle phrases without having to run a fulltext search on the blogs table then I will implement that also.

The search system is obviously still to be styled and lacks a pagination feature as yet but apart from that it seems to work.

This is caused because when you save your settings, a new registry value is added into your registry to replace or amend an older setting.

It’s just about not possible to expect consistent function from your computer without cleaning the register regularly. As time goes on, a Microsoft Registry tends to become developed with entries, which are no more valid. The only thing you are able to do to avoid this problem is to use a registry scanner so ofter.

Clearly, problems within the Windows registry can create a wide variety of difficulties that impact the easy use of your PC. You might also experience windows that do not close, or a wide variety of error messages.

A good Windows Registry will scan and detect any invalid entries in the registry. These kinds of entries are also known as registry corruption. When Microsoft released Office 2007, Microsoft FrontPage was conspicuous by its absence. Its place has been taken by Microsoft Expression Web, a product which clearly aims to take some of Adobe Dreamweaver’s huge share of the web design market. For once Microsoft finds itself playing the role of underdog and is sensibly adopting some of the tactics used by Adobe in gaining their dominant position in web design software.

Expression Web is part of Expression Studio, which also includes Expression Design a graphics tool which focuses on the creation of web interfaces. The full version of Expression Studio also includes Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition. Although Expression Studio is by no means a direct competitor to Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft are clearly aiming to create a solution for professional web designers similar to the one available from Adobe. So, how good is Expression web and will it enable Microsoft to make serious inroads into Adobe’s share of the professional web development market?

The short answer is “Yes”. Expression Web is not simply a new version of FrontPage. It does not rely on FrontPage extensions to create functionality. Instead, it offers a professional, standards-compliant web development platform which makes it easy for both inexperienced and seasoned web designers to create accessible web pages using XHTML, CSS, XML and JavaScript. It also out-performs Dreamweaver in accurately rendering CSS layouts in the design environment.

On the downside, Expression Web only runs on Windows and its tight integration with Visual Studio suggests that a Mac version may be some time in arriving, assuming one ever does arrive. A significant number of web designers prefer to use Macs and, for this reason, will never see Expression Web a serious rival to Dreamweaver. To win over such Mac diehards, Microsoft will have to make Expression Web not just as good as Dreamweaver but significantly better.

Another potential weakness in Expression Web is that its server-side support is limited to ASP.Net. Dreamweaver offers support for ASP, ASP.Net, PHP, Coldfusion and JSP. This having been said, Dreamweaver’s server-side facilities are fairly long in the tooth and have not been significantly upgraded for about five years and there is still no support for ASP.Net 2.0. It could therefore be argued that both Expression Web and Dreamweaver are lacking in the server-side development area.

Dreamweaver’s relative maturity in the market place gives it a huge advantage. There are over a million web developers using the program. It is perceived as the industry standard for web page creation. As well as the program itself, third-party developers have also created hundreds of useful add-ons (”Dreamweaver extensions” ) which add such features as ecommerce, navigation and security. Although Expression Web has similar support for such add-ons, it will be some years before they significantly enhance the functionality of the basic program.

In short, Expression Web is a worthy competitor to Adobe Dreamweaver. Both are aimed at casual as well as professional web designers and developers. Hopefully, the eventual winner of the competition between Microsoft and Adobe will be the increasing number of ordinary people who find themselves thrust into the ever-changing world of website creation.

Web pages are not actually the visually rich documents they appear to be; underlying each web page is HTML code. HTML pages consist of a hierarchy of elements: the html element is at the top of the hierarchy and contains two sub elements : the head and the body. The head element, by contrast, contains information about the web page; meta information as it is sometimes called. In this article, we will look at the different ways in which Dreamweaver CS4 allows you to modify elements within the head of a web page, beginning with the title.

The title element should contain a broad description of the content of the page. It is extremely important that each page should have a title and that the title be pertinent to the page that contains it. Dreamweaver automatically adds a title element to every new page containing the text “Untitled Document”. Perhaps the easiest way of modifying the default title in Dreamweaver is simply to enter a title in the Document Title box of the Document toolbar which is normally displayed at the top of the page. An alternative is the choose Modify - Page Properties and then click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen.

The title element is the only element which is syntactically required to be placed within the head element. In addition a number of optional meta elements may be placed which the head element to provide further information about the current page. One such meta element is created automatically by Dreamweaver along with the title: the content-type. This declares the character encoding to the browser and is particularly important if you have a site with an international audience. To specify the character encoding, choose Modify - Page Properties, click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen and then choose an option from the Encoding drop-down menu.

The meta description element is one of the most important since, along with the page title, it is often displayed when your page shows up in the search engine results. The description should consist of a couple of sentences summarising the content of the page. To set the description in Dreamweaver, choose Insert - HTML - Head Tags - Description then enter your description in the dialogue box which appears.

Let’s just mention one final meta element: keywords. The keywords meta element should contain a list of the important words and phrases to be found on the current page. Only text that actually appears on the page should be listed. To create the meta keywords element in Dreamweaver, choose Insert - HTML - Head Tags – Keywords.
